SINGAPORE: US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has said that the United States is fully prepared for the possibility of renewed military conflict with Iran, adding that Washington possesses sufficient weapons and military capabilities to respond if required.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore, Hegseth said the US military stockpiles were adequate for any potential operation, amid ongoing uncertainty over negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
His remarks come at a time when diplomatic efforts to end tensions between the United States and Iran have yet to produce a final agreement, despite repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that a peace deal may be close. Iranian officials, however, have not confirmed any such breakthrough.
Hegseth also addressed China’s growing military expansion, saying there were legitimate concerns about Beijing’s defence build-up and regional activity. He stressed that the United States did not seek unnecessary confrontation but aimed to maintain a balance of power in Asia.
He reiterated Washington’s desire for respectful relations with China while maintaining its current policy on Taiwan, adding that future arms sales decisions would remain under presidential authority.
