WASHINGTON: Around 30 members of the US House of Representatives from the Democratic Party have called for ending ambiguity over Israel’s nuclear programme.
The lawmakers have written a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging greater transparency on the issue.
In the letter, they said the United States is supporting Israel in the context of tensions with Iran while the US government continues to avoid officially acknowledging Israel’s possible nuclear weapons capability.
They argued that maintaining a policy of official ambiguity makes nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East more difficult.
The lawmakers also stressed that Congress has a constitutional responsibility to be fully informed about nuclear balance, escalation risks, contingency planning and regional stability in the Middle East.
