KARACHI: A new public park has been inaugurated in Korangi as part of ongoing efforts to expand recreational facilities and improve green spaces across Karachi.
Korangi Town Chairman Muhammad Naeem Sheikh attended the inauguration ceremony of Waqar Lodhi Shaheed Park in Union Council 9, developed by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab formally inaugurated the park alongside the father of the late Waqar Lodhi.
The ceremony was attended by PPP Korangi District President Jani Memon, Information Secretary Ahmed Raza, union council chairmen and vice-chairmen, local government representatives, officials of the KMC Parks and Horticulture Department, political and social figures, and a large number of residents.
During the event, Mayor Murtaza Wahab unveiled the park’s commemorative foundation stone before touring the newly developed facility. Guests inspected its landscaped gardens, green lawns, walking tracks, children’s play area, plantation work and other public amenities.
Addressing the gathering, Muhammad Naeem Sheikh said providing residents with clean, healthy and safe recreational spaces remained a key responsibility of local government institutions. He said public parks played an important role in improving urban life, promoting environmental sustainability and encouraging healthy outdoor activities.
He added that well-maintained parks offered secure and welcoming spaces for children, young people, women and senior citizens, while also enhancing the city’s natural environment and overall quality of life.
The chairman said Korangi Town would continue to prioritise the restoration of parks, tree plantation campaigns, cleanliness initiatives and other civic improvement projects to create a greener and more liveable Karachi.
He also urged residents to play their part by protecting public property, preserving trees and maintaining cleanliness so that parks and other community facilities could continue serving future generations.
Congratulating Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the KMC Parks and Horticulture Department and all officials involved in the project, Sheikh expressed hope that similar developments would be completed in other parts of the city to provide more quality recreational spaces for the public.
He said expanding green areas and improving public amenities would contribute to making Karachi a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city.
