BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the Taiwan issue remained the most sensitive and important matter in relations with the United States, cautioning that mishandling it could push both countries towards heightened tensions.
Speaking during talks with US President Donald Trump in Beijing, Xi said China and the United States should see each other as partners rather than rivals. He welcomed the American delegation and stressed the importance of cooperation between the two global powers.
Xi said both nations shared a responsibility to maintain global stability and economic growth, describing it as a historic duty. He noted that the world was closely watching the ongoing talks in Beijing and said stable bilateral ties would benefit the international community.
The Chinese president added that the global situation remained volatile and constantly changing, raising the question of whether major powers could work together to address shared challenges and bring stability.
He emphasised that diplomacy and dialogue were the only way to resolve international crises, urging both sides to manage differences through mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
