KARACHI: Karachi’s mayor, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has hailed the late former prime minister Benazir Bhutto as a symbol of resistance to dictatorship, saying her sacrifices for democracy remain a defining chapter in Pakistan’s history.
In a message issued on the anniversary of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Wahab said her martyrdom was an irreparable loss for the country and the nation. He described 27 December as one of the most tragic days in Pakistan’s history, a date that continues to remind the country of the cost paid for the defence of democratic values.
He said Bhutto had consistently raised her voice for the rights of the people and that her mission remained alive as a source of guidance for the nation. Wahab added that she empowered women in politics and emerged as a beacon of struggle and sacrifice for the youth.
The mayor said Benazir Bhutto stood as a guardian of the constitution and democracy and was a strong voice of popular politics. He added that the Pakistan Peoples Party remained committed to her ideology and continued to work, in line with her vision, for the promotion and strengthening of democratic values.
