KARACHI: The University of Karachi held a condolence meeting on Friday to pay tribute to Professor Dr Manzoor Ahmed, the former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, at the Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium.
Addressing the gathering, KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that a true teacher does not limit himself to imparting lessons but guides students and instils in them a sense of responsibility—qualities that were abundantly evident in Dr Manzoor Ahmed. “He was a teacher and mentor who set an example through his knowledge, character, and services,” he remarked.
Professor Dr Iraqi added that while institutions often outlast individuals, certain figures, through their exceptional contributions, become institutions themselves. He cited Dr Manzoor Ahmed as one such figure, whose work strengthened the global recognition of the University of Karachi. He also noted that although teaching staff are numerous today, the absence of mentorship is strongly felt, and Dr Manzoor Ahmed exemplified the rare mentor who guided both students and colleagues alike.
Speaking at the event, Professor Saleem Memon reflected on Dr Manzoor Ahmed’s unique personal charm and refined, compassionate manner of speaking, which left a lasting impact on all who interacted with him. Former Chairperson of the Department of International Relations, Professor Dr Sikandar Mehdi, highlighted that despite his considerable academic and administrative achievements, Dr Manzoor Ahmed remained humble, approachable, and a motivating guide for young faculty members.
Professor Dr Sadia Mahmood, Chairperson of the Department of Mass Communication, emphasised Dr Manzoor Ahmed’s pivotal role in establishing the University of Karachi’s international stature, a legacy that continues to challenge current educators. His daughter, Faziha Saadi, recalled that he fulfilled his responsibilities with sincerity and integrity, without seeking recognition, position, or fame.
Professor Dr Abdul Wahab Soori of the Philosophy Department praised Dr Manzoor Ahmed’s ability to explain complex subjects in simple terms, welcoming criticism with patience and courage. Dr Amir Jafri added that he helped make philosophy accessible to the wider public, encouraging broader engagement with the discipline.
Professor Dr Tanzeem Al-Firdous, who conducted the proceedings, noted that Dr Manzoor Ahmed authored numerous scholarly publications that remain a valuable academic resource, highlighting his multidimensional contributions to research and teaching.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants pledged to honour Dr Manzoor Ahmed’s legacy, ensuring that his academic, ethical, and intellectual contributions continue to inspire future generations.
