RAWALPINDI: Field Marshal Asim Munir said a professional, accountable and citizen-focused police force was essential to Pakistan’s internal security, describing law enforcement as a “sacred trust” and assuring officers of the armed forces’ full backing as they confronted evolving security challenges across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations, the army chief and chief of defence forces visited the National Police Academy in Islamabad, where he met officers of the Police Service of Pakistan. The visit was attended by the federal interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, and the minister of state for interior, Talat Chaudhry, underscoring the government’s emphasis on coordination between civilian authorities and security institutions.
Field Marshal Munir was received with a ceremonial guard of honor on arrival at the academy. He laid a wreath at the police martyrs’ monument and offered prayers for officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty, paying tribute to what he described as the police’s central role in protecting citizens and upholding the rule of law.
The moment, officials said, reflected a recognition of the human cost borne by law enforcement personnel in an environment marked by terrorism, organized crime and persistent public order challenges. During the visit, the army chief was briefed on ongoing reforms and modernization efforts within the police, including training and capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving professionalism and operational effectiveness.
Addressing senior police leadership, including inspectors general and additional inspectors general, Field Marshal Munir emphasized the importance of closer inter-agency cooperation and the adoption of modern policing practices. He said public trust remained the cornerstone of effective law enforcement and stressed that the police, as the first responders in most security situations, carried a unique responsibility to protect citizens’ lives, property and dignity. “The law is a sacred trust entrusted to the police, and a strong, professional and public-friendly police is indispensable for internal security,” he was quoted as saying. He added that the armed forces would continue to stand alongside what he described as Pakistan’s “brave and honorable” police personnel, particularly as they faced increasing demands with limited resources.
