LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved a plan to divide Lahore into two separate administrative districts in a bid to manage the city’s growing population and enhance governance, officials said.
The decision, taken during a high-level meeting, is set to be implemented immediately after the Basant festival, marking a major restructuring of the provincial capital’s administrative framework. The government plans to redraw administrative boundaries to tackle long-standing challenges such as traffic congestion, encroachments, and other municipal issues more effectively.
Lahore’s rapid population growth has placed significant strain on local services, prompting authorities to prioritize measures that can improve response times and address public complaints more efficiently. Relevant departments have been directed to finalize all preparations ahead of the split, and a follow-up meeting has been scheduled for 9 February to assess progress and ensure a smooth transition.
Punjab Chief Minister emphasized that the move is purely administrative rather than political, stressing that the goal is to bring government services closer to citizens. She highlighted that dividing the city into two districts would not only speed up service delivery but also provide immediate relief to residents and strengthen urban governance overall.
The decision received public backing from political figures, including Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who described the initiative as a vital step towards improving convenience for residents and ensuring complaints are resolved more efficiently.
