ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office has said Pakistan will not become a party to the Abraham Accord. At his weekly news briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi emphasized that Pakistan’s position on Palestine remains unchanged.
Andrabi clarified that it is a misconception to link Pakistan joining the Board of Peace with the Abraham Accord or any attempt to sidetrack the issue. He said joining the Board of Peace was a collective decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and all stakeholders. The move followed the completion of all procedural formalities.
The spokesperson explained that Pakistan’s main objective is to consolidate and sustain the ceasefire in Gaza, support reconstruction, and advance a just and lasting peace based on the Palestinian right to self-determination. He added that seven other key Muslim countries – Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia and Qatar – have also joined the Board of Peace alongside Pakistan.
Andrabi said Pakistan’s participation should be seen as part of a broader initiative by these eight countries to promote peace in Gaza and work towards a lasting solution to the Palestinian question. Alluding to the suffering, death, and destruction faced by the people of Gaza, he said the Board of Peace offers a glimmer of hope for both Gaza and the wider Palestinian issue.
He clarified that the Board of Peace does not replace the United Nations. It was established with a specific mandate under a UN Security Council resolution. He said it is intended to complement, not undermine, the UN system. Andrabi also noted that Pakistan has not decided to join the International Stabilization Force. Membership in the Board does not imply contributing troops.
Responding to a question, he said Pakistan remains opposed to the use of force or coercive measures, including sanctions on Iran or interference in its internal affairs. Pakistan will continue to advocate for peace and diplomacy, he said, emphasizing that the region cannot afford war and turmoil.
