NEW DEHLI: Authorities worldwide have reported a sharp rise in arrests, investigations, and deportations involving Indian citizens accused of serious crimes, raising concern about the international implications of criminal activity linked to India.
According to Hindustan Times, 89 individuals of Indian origin were listed in the United States immigration database as high-priority criminal cases. The US Department of Homeland Security has made the names and details of their alleged offences publicly available, highlighting charges ranging from drug trafficking and fraud to sex crimes, kidnapping, money laundering, and violent offences.
In addition, The Indian Express reported that the United States deported 3,800 individuals of Indian origin last year for living illegally in the country. Analysts suggest that these developments reflect not only the actions of individuals but also broader social and legal challenges within India.
They argue that growing lawlessness, social instability, and a controversial judicial system are harming India’s reputation on the global stage. Critics have also accused the Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi of prioritizing political consolidation over governance, claiming that extremist narratives are being used to distract from domestic shortcomings.
Experts warn that without significant reforms to the legal and social framework, incidents of transnational crime linked to Indian citizens could continue to rise, further affecting India’s global image and complicating its diplomatic and economic relationships. The surge in deportations and high-profile investigations underscores growing international concern over the intersection of crime, governance, and social stability in India.
