ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the Power Division to urgently file a review appeal with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) following the issuance of new Prosumer Regulations, officials said on Monday.
The Prime Minister made the directives while chairing a high-level special meeting in Islamabad, convened to examine the potential impact of the regulations on existing solar consumers. The government expressed concern that the new rules could adversely affect the contracts and investments of those who have installed solar systems under previous arrangements.
According to participants, the Prime Minister emphasized that the financial and operational burden of around 466,000 solar consumers should not be transferred to the country’s broader pool of 37.6 million households and businesses that rely entirely on electricity from the national grid. He stressed that equitable treatment of prosumers—households and businesses that both consume and produce electricity—was critical to maintaining confidence in renewable energy initiatives.
Shehbaz Sharif directed the Power Division to prepare a comprehensive strategy addressing the regulatory challenges, with a focus on safeguarding the interests of existing solar consumers while ensuring sustainable integration of renewable energy into the national grid. The Prime Minister’s office described the review appeal as a measure to protect contracts and avoid any retroactive financial or legal complications for those who have invested in solar systems.
