PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Sohail Afridi inaugurated a newly constructed residential complex for government employees at the Civil Quarters in Peshawar on Friday, describing the project as part of a broader effort to strengthen public institutions through improved staff welfare.
Officials said the development comprised 96 modern flats, each measuring 1,000 square feet, housed within a four-storey structure with a basement. Spread over 6.91 kanals, the complex was equipped with essential facilities including electricity, water, gas supply, security arrangements and designated parking spaces. The scheme was presented as a step towards addressing longstanding housing concerns faced by public servants posted in the provincial capital.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Afridi said the government remained committed to improving living conditions for state employees, arguing that secure and dignified housing directly contributed to better performance and institutional stability. He maintained that public servants formed the backbone of governance and that their welfare could not be separated from the efficiency of service delivery.
The chief minister noted that further housing initiatives were under consideration, alongside wider administrative reforms aimed at modernising public sector infrastructure. While acknowledging resource constraints, he stressed that incremental investments in staff welfare would yield long-term dividends for governance and public trust.
The Civil Quarters project, officials added, was designed to offer a safe and organised residential environment within close proximity to key government offices, reducing commuting pressures and improving accessibility for employees.
Afridi described government workers as a “valuable asset” to the province, reiterating that their welfare would remain a priority of his administration. The inauguration, modest in scale yet symbolic in intent, reflected an attempt to align infrastructure development with administrative reform at a time when public service efficiency remained under scrutiny.
