KARACHI: Sindh’s senior minister and provincial minister for information, transport, and mass transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has strongly criticized the use of language rooted in hatred and linguistic prejudice at a recent event in Karachi.
Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, Memon described the province as “the land of Sufis, a region of peace and love, historically known for generosity and tolerance.” He said the remarks made at the Governor House ceremony a few days ago were “deeply regrettable” and did not reflect the city’s spirit.
He added that Karachi has endured bitter experiences of hatred, prejudice, and linguistic tensions in the past, which have caused irreparable damage to the city. “Making such statements in this environment can threaten the peace and stability of Karachi,” he warned.
Memon also criticized the event for including inappropriate comments targeting state institutions. He said, “Using a dignified and constitutional space like Governor House to spread such ideas is neither suitable nor safe for the integrity of our institutions and civic harmony.” The minister emphasized that delivering biased and prejudiced messages in such forums attempts to revive tensions the city has already suffered.
“There is no room for this type of expression,” he said, adding that the remarks by one MQM-P representative about another MQM-P member at the event were particularly concerning. He concluded that the ceremony and the rhetoric it contained went against the principles of peace, brotherhood, and social cohesion in Karachi.
