Sharjeel Inam Memon said Karachi remained the country’s premier urban center, with “state-of-the-art” hospitals where patients arrive from other cities for treatment. “Karachi is Pakistan’s best city,” he told lawmakers, arguing that employment opportunities and modern medical services had made it a magnet for internal migration.
Memon also took aim at past federal influence over the city, declaring that Karachi would not be handed over to the centre “until doomsday”. He said that during the rule of Pervez Musharraf, when the city was effectively under federal control, Karachi had faced severe law and order problems, including extortion, so-called “body-in-a-sack” killings and the practice known as “China cutting”, an illegal form of land subdivision.
