GENEVA: Iran said it discussed proposals on its nuclear program and the potential lifting of sanctions during a fresh round of talks with the United States in Geneva. The nearly three-hour negotiations on Friday, facilitated by Oman, marked the third round of discussions between Tehran and Washington in recent weeks.
Iranian officials described the meeting as “serious,” with important proposals presented regarding nuclear activities and sanctions relief. Some measures under consideration will require consultation with other countries, indicating the talks are moving beyond a preliminary phase. While Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, Western powers and Israel have accused Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons capability — allegations Iran denies.
Following the meeting, Iranian negotiator Abbas Araghchi said the main elements of a possible agreement had been identified, though differences remain. Technical teams will now meet at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna to work on details, with sanctions relief being a central focus. The talks come amid heightened regional tensions, including the deployment of two US carrier strike groups, 17 F-22 fighter jets in Israel, and what has been described as the largest military buildup in the region since the 2003 Iraq war.
