BEIJING/MOSCOW/NEW YORK: China, Russia, Iran, and the United Nations have urged Pakistan and Afghanistan to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic dialogue amid rising tensions along the border. The call for calm follows clashes between Pakistani forces and the Afghan Taliban, which Pakistan described as unprovoked aggression.
The ISPR Director General, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said Pakistan’s security forces launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq in response to Taliban attacks, resulting in the deaths of over 270 Taliban personnel and the destruction of several key positions. Following the operation, the Taliban reportedly raised white flags at multiple locations.
China expressed deep concern over the escalation and stated that it is mediating through its channels, offering to play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation. Russian officials also called for an immediate halt to cross-border attacks and emphasized resolving differences through diplomacy, adding that Moscow would consider mediation if requested by both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The international community’s warnings highlight the urgent need for dialogue to prevent further escalation and maintain regional stability.
