ISLAMABAD: Pakistan were knocked out of the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup despite a dramatic five-run victory over Sri Lanka national cricket team in the Super 8 stage.
In the match played in Kandy, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field. Pakistan posted 212 for 8 in their 20 overs, powered by a commanding century from Sahibzada Farhan, who scored 100, and an explosive 84 from Fakhar Zaman.
To qualify for the semi-finals, Pakistan needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 or below to improve their net run rate. Although they secured a five-run win, Sri Lanka’s total of 207 for 6 was enough to end Pakistan’s campaign.
With three points and a superior net run rate, New Zealand national cricket team advanced to the semi-finals from Group 2, joining England cricket team, who had already sealed a place in the final four.
Farhan’s century also saw him set a new record for the most runs scored in a single edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, surpassing the previous mark of 319 set by Virat Kohli in 2014.
