NEW YORK: Pakistan warned the United Nations Security Council that the recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran, and subsequent retaliatory attacks, risked destabilising the entire region.
Addressing an emergency session convened by France, China, Russia, Bahrain, and Colombia, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, said, “We are deeply alarmed at the risk of regional conflagration.” He condemned the strikes, noting they violated international law and came at a time when renewed diplomatic efforts were underway to achieve a peaceful resolution.
The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Saturday, prompting Tehran to respond with a widespread missile barrage targeting Gulf states and Israel. Ambassador Ahmad also criticised Iran’s strikes on Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity with affected nations.
Highlighting Oman’s role in facilitating dialogue between Tehran and Washington, he urged all parties to avoid further actions that could undermine the security and territorial integrity of other regional countries.
