MEHAR: Two laborers were injured when a portion of the roof collapsed during renovation work in the newly constructed surgical ward at Taluka Hospital Mehar. The incident caused panic among hospital staff and workers present at the site.

The injured were identified as Saddam Hussain Khaskheli and Muhammad Yousuf. They were shifted to the hospital’s emergency ward and are reported to be in serious condition. The workers said the collapse occurred while they were carrying out renovation in the MS office, eye department, and surgical ward.
Dr. Abdul Waheed Daryani, medical superintendent of Taluka Hospital Mehar, said renovation work is ongoing in multiple departments. He stated that during the placement of a new girder, it fell, causing minor injuries to one worker, and claimed that no major incident had occurred. He added the injured worker was stable.
Civil society members and residents, however, alleged that the hospital, handed over to GIMS two years ago with a budget of millions, is still using the old building rather than constructing a new facility. They claimed that substandard materials and aging sections of the building are causing repeated roof collapses, including an incident two days ago that injured a woman.
Residents and local activists urged the Sindh government and GIMS administration to build a new hospital building, warning that continued repairs of the old structure with inferior materials would put workers and patients at ongoing risk.\
