ISLAMABAD: In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the Pakistani government is considering reviewing petroleum prices weekly instead of the current 15-day cycle. The move aims to better manage rising global oil prices and potential supply disruptions.

A meeting chaired by Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb assessed the country’s fuel situation. Officials confirmed that Pakistan currently holds 25 days’ worth of petrol and diesel reserves. The government has also instructed the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) to issue new tenders and requested Saudi Arabia to supply oil through alternative routes. Insurance costs for tankers have surged, and authorities are evaluating ways to cover additional expenses to ensure uninterrupted supply.
The All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association urged the Prime Minister to prevent hoarding and artificial shortages, highlighting that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) must maintain at least 20 days of stock. Officials assured that fuel distribution will be closely monitored over the next eight months to curb smuggling and panic buying.
In parallel, the government is preparing a national energy conservation plan. Proposed measures include:
- Online and smart working systems for corporate, telecom, and government offices.
- Online classes for schools and educational institutions in March 2026.
- Minimum on-site staff attendance for essential operations.
- Digital services for citizens two days a week.
Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik also met the Saudi ambassador, confirming a fuel shipment from Yanbu Port and another from ADNOC’s Fujairah Port. These steps are designed to preempt potential shortages and stabilize domestic fuel availability amid global uncertainty.
