ISLAMABAD: The government’s sharp increase in aviation fuel prices is expected to push airline ticket fares higher and escalate operational costs across the aviation sector.
The price of GP1 jet fuel, used by commercial aircraft, has been raised by Rs154 per liter, jumping from Rs188.93 to Rs342.37 per liter—an 82% increase in a short period. Aviation experts warn that this record hike could prompt airlines to raise ticket prices by up to Rs5,000 per passenger to offset the higher operating costs.
The government has also increased fuel prices for small training aircraft and air ambulance services, with rates rising by Rs85 per liter to Rs670. This has raised concerns among aviation professionals and pilot training institutions.
Pilot training costs to surge
Imran Aslam Khan, an aviation expert, said the spike in jet fuel prices could increase the cost of pilot training by up to Rs1 million. He warned that if the price pressures continue, flying schools may struggle to operate, potentially halting pilot training programs altogether.
Air ambulance services affected
The increase in fuel prices will also impact air ambulance operations. The founder of the Aircraft Owners Association said fares for air ambulance services are likely to rise due to higher fuel costs. He urged the government to ensure a consistent fuel supply for aviation operations, stressing that uninterrupted fuel availability is vital for essential aviation services.
Industry representatives also warned that if fuel supply is disrupted or limited, flights operated by flying schools and air ambulance aircraft could be suspended within days. Aviation experts emphasized that maintaining a stable supply of aviation fuel is critical for the continuity of essential air services.
