WASHINGTON: The Pentagon spent about $5.6 billion worth of advanced ammunition during the first two days of US attacks on Iran, according to details shared with the United States Congress.
The figures relate to the ongoing operation, Operation Epic Fury, during which US forces deployed large quantities of modern weaponry in the opening phase of the conflict.
US officials said lawmakers in Congress had expressed concern about the rapid depletion of some of the country’s most advanced weapons systems as the fighting continued.
According to American media reports, the administration of Donald Trump is expected to submit a supplemental defence budget request to Congress later this week, a move that could face resistance from Democratic Party lawmakers.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon’s chief spokesperson said the United States Department of Defense had all the resources necessary to carry out any mission required by the military.
