WASHINGTON: US President said he could be open to talks with , but stressed that any negotiations would depend on Tehran accepting terms aligned with American interests.
Speaking in an interview with , Trump said he had heard that Iran “wanted to talk badly” and that he might consider negotiations under favourable conditions, even as military tensions in the continued to escalate.
The US president said recent US strikes had achieved results “way beyond expectation” and expressed surprise at Iran’s missile and drone attacks against Gulf countries.
Trump also criticised the appointment of as Iran’s new supreme leader following the death of his father, , in Israeli strikes.
Calling the appointment “a big mistake,” Trump suggested he would have preferred a leader capable of bringing “harmony and peace” to Iran. He had earlier hinted at wanting a role in influencing Iran’s next leadership but did not elaborate further.
Meanwhile, said the considers its objective achieved once Iran no longer poses a threat to the United States.
The ongoing conflict has also disrupted oil production and shipping across the region, particularly around the , a crucial global energy corridor, with US gasoline prices rising sharply since late February.
