WASHINGTON: The Trump administration is planning to announce a multinational alliance to protect ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by a US newspaper. The initiative is expected to be formally unveiled early this week as tensions continue to rise in the strategic waterway.
The report said several countries have agreed in principle to join the coalition aimed at providing security for commercial vessels travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) challenged the move, with a spokesperson responding to earlier remarks by US President Donald Trump, who had claimed that Iran’s navy had been destroyed. The IRGC spokesman said Trump should demonstrate his claim by sending the US Navy into the Gulf.
The spokesman also stated that Iran is currently using missiles developed more than a decade ago and has not yet deployed missiles produced after June 2025, suggesting that more advanced weapons remain unused.
