WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has launched an extraordinary attack on America’s closest allies, declaring that the United States no longer requires the support of Nato members, Japan, South Korea or Australia following what he described as a major military victory against Iran.
In a characteristically blunt statement, the US president expressed fury that most Nato allies had informed Washington they would not participate in military action against Iran. “We no longer need or want the help of Nato countries,” Trump said. “We don’t need Japan, Australia or South Korea’s help anymore. We don’t need anyone’s help.”
The president’s remarks mark a dramatic escalation in his long-standing criticism of allied nations, which he has frequently accused of freeloading off American military protection. Trump claimed the US had destroyed Iran’s ground forces, navy, air force, anti-aircraft systems and radar capabilities, asserting that the threat posed by Iranian leadership to European and Middle Eastern allies had been eliminated.
“Most of these countries agreed with what we were doing regarding Iran. I wasn’t surprised by their actions,” he said, appearing to reference allies’ reluctance to commit forces. The president returned to a familiar theme, complaining about the financial burden of collective defence.
“We spend billions of dollars annually on Nato, which protects these countries. We protect them, and these countries do nothing for us when needed.” He added: “I’ve always considered Nato a one-way street. We spent billions on Nato countries, but they never did anything for us when we needed them.”
