KARACHI: Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed, chairman of the Karachi Port Trust, visited two key healthcare facilities in the city, where he reviewed medical services and met staff in an effort to assess patient care and infrastructure. The visit included stops at KDLB Hospital and KPT Hospital, both of which serve communities in the port area.
Accompanied by Dr Danish Aman and senior medical officers, the chairman toured several departments. He spent time in the paediatric ward, where he spoke with children receiving treatment and their families. Hospital staff briefed him on the challenges they faced, including patient load and resource constraints. The visit offered a close look at day-to-day operations, as well as the pressures on public healthcare services in densely populated neighborhoods.
During discussions with Dr Aman, Rear Admiral Ahmed outlined plans to expand KPT Hospital. He said the aim was to improve both access and quality of care for residents of Keamari, an area that has long struggled with limited healthcare facilities. Officials explained that the proposed expansion would include enhancements to emergency care and the introduction of more specialized services. These changes, they said, were intended to meet the growing needs of the local population.
The visit also served as a signal of the port authority’s broader role in supporting social infrastructure beyond its core maritime functions. By focusing on healthcare, officials suggested, the organization was seeking to address gaps that directly affect the wellbeing of communities linked to the port.
