MEHAR: Intermittent rainfall in Mehar and surrounding areas has brought daily life to a standstill, with widespread disruption reported across the taluka. Continuous rain has led to water accumulation in markets, streets, government offices and low-lying areas, severely affecting residents, particularly those living in mud houses.
The situation was worsened by power failures after more than a dozen electricity feeders linked to Mehar, Radhan and Fareedabad grid stations tripped during the rainfall. Prolonged outages added to the difficulties faced by the public, leaving many areas without electricity for extended periods.
Key commercial and public areas, including Ghanta Ghar Chowk, Shahi Bazaar, Cloth Market, Mehar Police Station, Municipal Committee and Education Department offices, as well as major roads like Beeto Road, Gahi Mahesar Road, Fareedabad Road and Thiba Road, have been severely waterlogged. Streets across all 14 wards are reportedly submerged, creating unhygienic conditions and making movement difficult.
Local residents and traders have expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of timely action by the local administration, Municipal Committee and Town Committee, despite prior weather alerts. They said no effective drainage or emergency measures were taken to deal with the rainfall impact.
Shopkeepers, daily wage workers and pushcart vendors are among the worst affected, as waterlogged roads have disrupted business activity and limited access to markets. Farmers in the area are also facing losses, with reports indicating that heavy rains have damaged wheat crops, raising concerns about the impact on the upcoming harvest.
The worsening situation has highlighted the need for better drainage systems, stronger emergency preparedness and timely response mechanisms to minimise damage and protect livelihoods during adverse weather conditions.
