BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that if Germany had been consulted, it would have advised the United States against launching an attack on Iran. Speaking in the lower house of parliament, he said Berlin still has many unanswered questions about the strategy behind the US and Israeli campaign that began on February 28.
Merz said there is no convincing plan so far explaining how the operation could succeed, adding that Washington neither consulted Germany nor considered European support necessary. He noted that Germany’s position has become more critical in recent days, although it initially took a cautious stance and avoided strongly condemning the strikes during ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.
