BAGHDAD: An active resistance group in Iraq has claimed responsibility for destroying three key sensitive locations at the US-operated Harir Air Base in Erbil, resulting in a significant decline in American military activities at the facility. According to Iranian media citing a representative in Baghdad, US military movement at the base has nearly come to a halt following sustained missile and drone attacks.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an alliance of Iran-backed armed factions, claimed that critical infrastructure at the base, including the main radar system, was repeatedly targeted over the past two weeks during coordinated strikes. The group stated that the radar system was ultimately destroyed after multiple attacks, leading to an estimated 95 percent reduction in US air operations at the Erbil base, with logistical flights largely suspended.
The statement further indicated that US forces are now relying on drones for limited surveillance instead of helicopters. Separate claims were also made regarding missile strikes on Victoria Base located within Baghdad International Airport, reportedly resulting in American casualties, though these claims have not yet been independently verified.
The attacks represent a significant escalation in pressure on US military installations across Iraq as the broader regional conflict continues to intensify since hostilities began on February 28. US forces in Iraq and neighboring countries have faced repeated targeting by Iran-aligned groups amid ongoing American and Israeli operations against Iranian military infrastructure and nuclear facilities.
