WASHINGTON: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that US President Donald Trump believes there is an opportunity to reach a deal with Iran, even as Israel continues its military operations in the region.
Netanyahu said he had spoken with Trump following the US president’s announcement of talks with Iran. He described Trump as a “friend” and said the two leaders discussed the possibility of reaching an agreement that could support the objectives of the ongoing conflict while protecting Israel’s key interests.
According to Netanyahu, Trump sees a chance to “leverage the massive achievements” of the Israeli Defence Forces and the US military to secure an agreement aligned with strategic goals. However, Netanyahu stressed that any deal must safeguard Israel’s vital national interests.
He reiterated that Israel would continue to protect its security under all circumstances and confirmed that military operations remain ongoing. Israeli forces are continuing strikes in Iran and Lebanon, targeting what Netanyahu described as key threats.
Netanyahu also said that Israel is working to dismantle Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes and claimed that recent operations led to the elimination of additional nuclear scientists. He added that Israeli forces remain prepared to continue their actions.
The Israeli prime minister further stated that operations against Hezbollah are also intensifying, highlighting the wider regional scope of the conflict.
His remarks reflect a dual approach of maintaining military pressure while exploring diplomatic possibilities, as discussions around a potential US-Iran deal continue.
