KARACHI: A report by The Telegraph has highlighted a new and potentially serious challenge for the United States in the Persian Gulf, pointing to Iran’s growing fleet of small, hard-to-detect submarines.
According to the report, Iran has developed a network of so-called “midget submarines” — compact but potentially lethal vessels designed to operate effectively in the shallow and murky waters of the Gulf.
These submarines are said to be difficult to detect using conventional surveillance systems.
Experts cited in the report said the small size and quiet operation of these submarines make them a challenge even for advanced US naval technology, including surveillance aircraft and satellite systems.
The report suggested that these submarines could play a key role in any potential disruption of maritime routes, particularly in strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies passes.
Analysts noted that such vessels may have the capability to deploy naval mines or launch torpedoes while remaining concealed, increasing the risks for commercial shipping and military fleets operating in the region.
The development raises fresh questions about the balance of naval power in the Gulf and whether existing defence systems are fully equipped to counter evolving underwater threats.
