WASHINGTON: The United States and Israel have temporarily removed two senior Iranian officials, Abbas Araghchi and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, from their target list to create space for potential peace negotiations.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, US officials said the decision was made to facilitate diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.
Officials indicated that both figures would remain off the target list for four to five days, as Donald Trump signalled openness to high-level talks to de-escalate tensions.
The report added that mediators from Turkey, Pakistan, and Egypt are pushing to arrange meetings between US and Iranian negotiators to explore possibilities for ending the war.
However, officials cautioned that chances of success remain low due to significant differences between the demands of Washington and Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that no direct talks are taking place with the United States, stating that the exchange of messages through intermediaries does not constitute negotiations.
