GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan cabinet has pledged strict action against those responsible for the violence that erupted in Gilgit and Skardu on 1 March, following the launch of a high-level judicial inquiry into the incidents.
The cabinet condemned the unrest and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, including both security personnel and civilians, extending condolences to the families affected. The special cabinet meeting, held at the Chief Minister Secretariat, was jointly chaired by Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Yar Muhammad and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam.
Officials briefed the gathering that during the protests, miscreants engaged in widespread vandalism and arson, causing damage to public and private property, including offices of international organizations, educational institutions, and state installations.
The cabinet stressed that these acts were criminal in nature and did not reflect religious sentiments, noting that religious scholars and relevant organizations had condemned the violence.
A judicial commission has been formed to conduct a transparent, independent, and impartial investigation, and the cabinet expressed confidence that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice. Authorities reported that CCTV footage and other evidence had been collected, and law enforcement agencies were working to identify suspects.
The cabinet directed that strict legal action be taken against those involved in arson and vandalism while ensuring the safety of innocent civilians. The government also appealed to the public, religious leaders, and civil society to cooperate with authorities in maintaining peace and stability across the region.
