WASHINGTON: Donald Trump was reported to be seeking a swift end to the conflict with Iran without immediately reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to media sources
The report said Trump had informed his advisers that his priority was to bring the war to a close first, while postponing any attempt to restore full operations in the narrow maritime corridor, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. The strait, which has remained disrupted amid the conflict, is considered one of the most sensitive chokepoints in global trade.
According to the media , the US president believed that launching a military or logistical effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz at this stage would complicate the situation and risk extending hostilities. Internal assessments shared with Trump reportedly suggested that such an operation could prolong the war by an additional four to six weeks.
Foreign media reports added that Trump and his aides had recently reviewed the potential consequences of reopening the waterway during active conflict, concluding that it would require substantial resources and could escalate tensions further. As a result, the administration appeared to favour a phased approach, prioritising de-escalation before addressing maritime security.
Analysts say the strategy reflects concerns within the US administration about avoiding a drawn-out military engagement, particularly in a region already marked by volatility. However, delaying the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could continue to disrupt global energy markets and heighten uncertainty for international shipping and trade.
