WASHINGTON: Donald Trump threatened to “send Iran back to the Stone Age” as tensions escalated, linking any ceasefire to the full reopening and security of the Strait of Hormuz.
In his statement, Trump said Iran’s new leadership appeared less hardline and more pragmatic than before, adding that Tehran had sought a ceasefire with the United States.
He said Washington would consider the request, but only after the Strait of Hormuz was fully reopened and secured. Until then, he warned, the US could take devastating action against Iran.
Speaking in an interview with a British news agency, Trump also claimed that the US had effectively brought about a “complete regime change” in Iran, though he did not provide details to support the assertion.
He said American forces would leave Iran soon but declined to give a specific timeline, adding that some targets still remained. If necessary, he said, the US could return to strike those targets again.
Trump reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, insisting that Washington would closely monitor nuclear materials through satellite surveillance.
He also signalled dissatisfaction with NATO, saying he would express his disapproval in an upcoming speech and was considering withdrawing the United States from the alliance.
The remarks came amid rising regional tensions, with uncertainty growing over the prospects for de-escalation despite diplomatic signals from Tehran.
