KARACHI: Romania and Pakistan took a significant step towards deepening their economic and maritime partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on port cooperation, marking a practical framework to boost trade and connectivity between South Asia and Europe.
The agreement was formalized during an online ceremony between the National Company Maritime Ports Administration S.A. Constanța and the Karachi Port Trust, with signatures from Mihai Teodorescu and Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Transport of both nations, alongside ambassadors Dan Stoenescu and Ilyas Mehmood Nizami, as well as members of the Pakistan Romania Business Council, including Sohail Shamim Firpo and Atif Farooqi.
The MoU sets out to enhance maritime connectivity between Karachi and the Port of Constanța on the Black Sea, facilitating more efficient trade flows and supporting Pakistan’s ambitions to expand its maritime sector and blue economy.
Constanța, one of the largest ports on the Black Sea, offers direct access to Central and Western Europe through the Danube corridor, enabling goods to reach major hubs such as Rotterdam in the Netherlands via inland waterways.
Analysts said this multimodal route promises a cost-effective and sustainable solution for European distribution while opening new trade avenues for both countries. Under the agreement, a joint working group will be established to coordinate training, exchange expertise in port management, and develop new trade opportunities.
Romanian exports, including machinery, industrial equipment, chemicals, and agricultural products, are expected to gain improved access to Pakistan and wider regional markets, while Pakistani goods will benefit from more efficient entry points into Europe.
