KARACHI: Sharjeel Inam Memon unveiled a pioneering initiative in Sindh aimed at providing women-only electric Pink Taxis and scooters, part of a broader effort to tackle harassment complaints while promoting female empowerment.
At the launch event, Memon outlined that the scheme would ensure both drivers and passengers were women, creating safe and accessible transport options for female commuters across the province. The initiative includes free Pink Scooties, along with complimentary driving licenses and training, with approximately 20,000 women reportedly already having applied for licenses.
Speaking on the occasion, Memon also highlighted the success of Sindh’s electric bus network, presenting it as a model for sustainable transport and job creation. He encouraged investors to focus on the Dhabeji Economic Zone, where industrial expansion, particularly in electric vehicle manufacturing, could generate substantial employment opportunities.
Memon further noted that President Asif Ali Zardari had previously encouraged investment in the electric vehicle sector during his visit to China, highlighting the government’s strategic push towards a greener economy. Addressing wider economic concerns, the minister acknowledged the impact of rising global oil prices on fuel and milk costs and said the government was preparing relief measures for citizens.
He stressed that, despite economic challenges, efforts must continue to safeguard the country’s reputation and ensure stability. The scheme, by integrating transport safety, skill development, and employment, is expected to transform women’s mobility in Sindh, offering both practical benefits and symbolic affirmation of female empowerment in public life.
