PESHAWAR: At least 25 people have died and 77 others injured in rain-related incidents across multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since March 25, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported on Thursday.
The casualties include 18 children, five women, and two men, while the injured comprise 33 men, nine women, and 35 children.
According to PDMA data, 88 houses were damaged, with 17 destroyed and 71 partially damaged. Affected districts include Bannu, Abbottabad, Kohat, Peshawar, Nowshera, Bajaur, Lakki Marwat, Kurram, Hangu, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Upper Dir, Battagram, North Waziristan, and Tank.
Relief operations are ongoing, with PDMA coordinating with Rescue 1122, district administrations, and other agencies. Officials have been directed to provide immediate assistance, especially in Bannu, identified as the worst-hit district.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay away from vulnerable tourist sites. The Emergency Operations Centre remains fully functional, and a helpline has been established for information and assistance.
Earlier, PDMA issued a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) alert for five upper districts, including Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Upper Kohistan. The warning highlighted the risk of flash floods and landslides caused by melting glaciers combined with intense rainfall.
Scattered rains, thunderstorms, and isolated heavy downpours are expected to continue, increasing the likelihood of further glacial lake outbursts and flash floods in vulnerable areas.
