NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to address rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. Delegates discussed proposals aimed at ensuring the security of maritime vessels and maintaining the free flow of trade through the strait.
During the session, Bahrain’s draft resolution suggested possible military measures to protect ships, and members debated whether the use of force should be authorized to keep commercial routes open. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) emphasized that Gulf countries face threats from Iranian aggression and affirmed that member states have full rights to defend themselves.
The draft resolution also called on the Security Council to guarantee the protection of maritime routes, highlighting the strategic and economic importance of the Strait of Hormuz for global energy and trade.
