ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir has claimed that US President Donald Trump is willing to visit Pakistan for negotiations with Iran, but has set a condition for his arrival.
He said the potential visit is linked to ongoing diplomatic efforts and evolving negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Hamid Mir said he had received information as early as April 1 that talks between the United States and Iran would take place in Pakistan. However, due to the sensitive nature of the issue, there were concerns about reporting it at the time, as it could have disrupted the process.
He said his team was also aware of a second round of talks being planned in Pakistan but was cautioned that broadcasting the news could lead to denials from the United States, Iran and Pakistan. After internal deliberations, the report was eventually aired, and Trump later indicated that the second round of negotiations could indeed take place in Pakistan.
Mir expressed caution over relying on Trump’s statements, noting that negotiations could shift at any stage and delays were possible. He added that most issues between the two sides had reportedly seen progress, except for one key point on which Iran had refused to show flexibility, linking any agreement to a ceasefire in Lebanon.
Regarding reports of Trump visiting Pakistan, Mir said the US president was interested in coming for talks, citing Chinese diplomatic sources, but had set a condition that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian must also be present.
He added that multiple international agreements were under discussion and experts from various countries were already in Pakistan to help draft potential frameworks. Mir also claimed that Trump was attempting to secure another diplomatic breakthrough with North Korea ahead of a planned visit to China in May.
He said Chinese officials had conveyed to Washington the need to resolve the Iran issue before that visit, suggesting April could be a crucial month for progress.
Mir further said that during negotiations, US Vice President JD Vance had briefed Trump on Iran’s apparent willingness to show flexibility on uranium-related issues and the Strait of Hormuz, which reportedly surprised the US president.
Commenting on regional dynamics, Mir described the Lebanon issue as highly sensitive and argued that US leadership needed to assert independence in its decision-making, particularly in relation to Israel.
