KARACHI: Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology (KIET) said its 23rd convocation would be held on 20 April 2026 at the Expo Center Karachi.
Sindh governor Nihal Hashmi would attend the ceremony as chief guest and award gold and silver medals to students with outstanding academic performance. A total of 700 graduates from various departments would be awarded degrees at the convocation, which would begin at 6pm.
The announcement was made by KIET president Professor Dr Muhammad Khalid Khan, pro-chancellor Dr Yousuf Zaidi, chief legal adviser Barrister Shaheer Hassan and director quality assurance Professor Dr Sajida Parveen at a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club.
Officials said participants would be required to bring their original national identity cards and invitation letters, while children under the age of 12 would not be allowed to attend.
Addressing the press conference, Professor Dr Muhammad Khalid Khan said the institution’s aim was not only to provide education but also to bring about a positive and lasting change in society. He said the university remained committed to offering quality education, particularly to students who could not access larger universities, under its mission of inclusive quality education. Over the past 25 years, he said, the institution had produced more than 14,000 graduates who were now contributing to the market and Pakistani society.
He added that KIET graduates were working in leading organisations in Pakistan and abroad, and that the university’s students had also represented the country at international level, including in programming competitions such as International Collegiate Programming Contest. He said the institution had secured more than Rs200m in competitive funding and established partnerships with several national and international organisations.
He said more than 60 research papers by faculty members had been published in international journals this year, while the university had hosted over 10 international conferences in recent years. KIET, he added, was a technology-focused university with particular emphasis on computer science, data science and cyber security, and had also been part of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence.
Pro-chancellor Dr Yousuf Zaidi said KIET was continuing to progress steadily and that the establishment of a new principal campus at Ahsanabad on the Super Highway reflected its commitment to modern educational standards. He said around 700 graduates would enter various industries in Pakistan through the convocation.
He added that the institution was working to further improve and digitalise its systems to provide better facilities for students, while ensuring an environment where they could succeed both academically and professionally. He said the new campus would offer modern academic facilities, laboratories, sports amenities and infrastructure in line with international standards.
Barrister Shaheer Hassan said the institution had laid the foundation for a new academic initiative in Karachi and had achieved significant research milestones and publications over the past two years. He said work had begun on a new campus in a central area of the city, where programmes in computer science and other modern scientific fields would be offered.
He added that the project had received formal approval from relevant authorities, including support from the Higher Education Commission, and would aim to promote quality education and create new opportunities for students. He said the institution would invite stakeholders to visit the campus once construction and arrangements were completed.
