TEHRAN: Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said the country would continue to assert its legitimate rights and rejected remarks by Donald Trump on Tehran’s nuclear programme. In a statement, Pezeshkian said Iran’s fundamental position was based on preserving peace, stability and security in the region, adding that Tehran did not seek to escalate conflict or initiate wars.
He said Iran had no intention of attacking any country and was exercising its lawful right to self-defence, stressing that no external power had the authority to deny people their rights. Pezeshkian said Trump had no right to claim that Iran could not benefit from its nuclear rights, calling such assertions unacceptable.
He further alleged that hostile forces had failed to achieve their objectives and had instead targeted infrastructure, schools and hospitals, describing such actions as reflective of broader intentions against Iran. Separately, Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said there had been some progress in talks with the United States, though significant gaps remained.
Ghalibaf criticised what he described as a blockade, calling it an “irrational decision”, and questioned restrictions on Iran’s access to the Strait of Hormuz while other countries continued to use the route.
