KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has announced a two-day suspension of water supply in several parts of the city from Saturday, as maintenance work begins at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, a key node in Karachi’s water distribution network.
In a statement issued on Friday, a KWSC spokesperson said the interruption was required to allow technical work to connect a newly constructed pipeline with the existing system at the pumping station. The work is scheduled to begin at 12 noon on April 25 and is expected to continue for 48 hours.
According to the revised operational plan, nine pumps at the Dhabeji station will remain shut during this period. The spokesperson said that seven of these pumps would resume operations on April 27, while the remaining two would stay offline for an additional five days due to further maintenance requirements.
The temporary shutdown is expected to have a widespread impact across Karachi, with water supply suspended in several densely populated areas including North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Landhi, Korangi and Chanesar Town.
Hydrants at Nipa, Safoora and Sakhi Hassan will also remain closed during the maintenance period. The corporation warned that the disruption would significantly affect the city’s overall water availability, with an estimated shortfall of around 250 million gallons per day.
Karachi typically receives approximately 650 million gallons daily, meaning the suspension would temporarily reduce supply by nearly a third. Officials described the maintenance as necessary for improving the efficiency and stability of the Dhabeji system, which plays a central role in supplying water to the city.
