KARACHI: The federal government has announced a reduction of 25 to 50 per cent in storage charges at Karachi port terminals, in a move aimed at easing pressure on exporters and improving the flow of goods, particularly shipments bound for Gulf countries.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the relief package is designed to support exporters facing delays at ports, with special concessions for cargo destined for Gulf markets. He said the measure would help reduce financial strain on businesses while addressing long-standing logistical bottlenecks.
According to the announcement, the relief also applies to containers and cargo currently held at ports, as authorities work to improve clearance procedures and reduce congestion at key maritime facilities. The government has described the initiative as part of broader efforts to strengthen export competitiveness and streamline supply chains.
Under the revised schedule, a 50 per cent waiver on storage charges will be applied at the KGT terminal from 1 to 20 March. At the KICT terminal, exporters will receive a 50 per cent reduction from 1 to 10 March, while SAPT terminals will offer a 25 per cent discount from 11 to 31 March.
The minister said the measures reflect an ongoing push to align port operations with modern trade requirements and to address inefficiencies in cargo handling and clearance systems. He also praised Karachi Port Trust Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed, acknowledging his efforts in improving operational performance and administrative coordination at the port.
Officials said the relief package is expected to provide immediate support to exporters while longer-term reforms in maritime logistics and infrastructure continue to be developed.
