TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed it has seized another vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging the ship was in contact with the US military and had violated navigation rules in the strategic waterway.
According to Iranian authorities, the vessel ignored repeated warnings after entering restricted waters and failed to alter its course, prompting what they described as a “lawful interception” by Iranian forces.
Officials said the ship was accused of breaching regulations imposed in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes. Tehran alleged that the vessel maintained contact with US military channels, although it did not provide further details or evidence to substantiate the claim.
The IRGC said operations in the region would continue against any ships found violating maritime rules, stressing that Iran would maintain what it described as control over security in the strait.
In parallel remarks, Iranian military officials urged Washington to demonstrate seriousness about negotiations by first ending what they called a blockade-like situation in the Strait of Hormuz, linking maritime tensions to broader diplomatic disputes.
They warned that any actions perceived as threatening security or violating Iranian-defined maritime regulations would cross a “red line” and be met with a firm response. The latest incident adds to ongoing tensions in the Gulf, where shipping lanes remain a persistent flashpoint amid wider regional and international disputes involving Iran and Western powers.
