KARACHI: The Sri Lankan Consulate General organised colourful celebrations of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known as “Suriya Wedana 26”, at the lush green lawns of Iqra University Defence Campus, drawing a large gathering of the Sri Lankan community, students and guests.

The event featured traditional games and cultural activities that created a festive atmosphere, with participants actively engaging in the celebrations.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri Lanka’s Consul General Sanjeewa Pitiola said “Suriya Wedana” was not only the beginning of a new year but also a symbol of unity, harmony and renewed hope. He said the festival helped people reconnect with their cultural roots while promoting mutual understanding between different communities.

He also highlighted the long-standing friendly relations between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, saying such cultural events played an important role in strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries. He praised the participation of Sri Lankan students, calling them cultural ambassadors of their country.
Traditional Sri Lankan dishes including kiribath, kokis and fish ambul thiyal were also served, which were well received by attendees.
Prominent business figures including representatives of the Pakistan Sri Lanka Business Forum Aslam Pakhali, Sohail Shamim Firpo, Atif Farooqui and Athar Iqbal attended the event.
Representatives of Iqra University also participated and appreciated the cultural celebration, noting that growing economic and cultural ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka were a positive development.
