KARACHI: Faryal Talpur issued strict instructions to the Sindh inspector general, telling him to report any political interference in cases involving drug dealers.
She said if any member of the provincial or national assembly, or any office-bearer of the Pakistan Peoples Party, called to recommend leniency for narcotics offenders, the request must be ignored and reported to her immediately. She added that the party would take swift and strict disciplinary action against anyone found involved.
The remarks were made during a key meeting of the Sindh assembly’s standing committee on home affairs, where Talpur held an exchange with Javed Alam Odho on efforts to curb drug trafficking. According to a senior journalist, Talpur expressed strong anger over the worsening narcotics situation in the province.
During the session, the inspector general said the police’s primary objective was to maintain law and order and control criminal groups. Talpur interrupted and asked whether preventing drug trafficking was not among his priorities, after which he fell silent.
Members of the assembly present at the meeting pointed out that large consignments of drugs were being smuggled through the Sindh-Balochistan border. They said it would be impossible to stop the flow of narcotics unless the border was effectively sealed.
