KARACHI: A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation and the European Investment Bank to support improvements in water supply and distribution services in Karachi.
The agreement was aimed at strengthening the city’s water infrastructure through the establishment of modern filtration plants and upgrades to distribution systems at key locations. It marked what officials described as a significant step towards addressing Karachi’s growing water needs through sustainable solutions.
The signing ceremony was attended by Mayor Karachi and chairman of KWSC, Murtaza Wahab. The memorandum was formally signed by managing director KWSC Ahmed Ali Siddiqui and head of division at the European Investment Bank Edvardas Bumsteinas, who reaffirmed their commitment to improving public utility services and civic infrastructure.
Under the first phase of the partnership, modern water filtration plants were planned at Gharo and Pipri pumping stations. These facilities were expected to include advanced purification technology, improved design systems and monitoring mechanisms aimed at enhancing water treatment and supply efficiency for residents.
Speaking on the occasion, Murtaza Wahab described the agreement as a positive development for the city and the country, saying it was significant that after a decade the European Investment Bank had resumed engagement in Pakistan, particularly in Karachi’s urban infrastructure and water sector.
He said the collaboration would improve sustainable water supply services and introduce environmentally responsible technologies. He added that Karachi required large-scale investment and international cooperation to meet future water demand and modernise its ageing infrastructure.
The mayor expressed hope for continued cooperation with the European Investment Bank, saying further support could improve KWSC’s capacity, operational efficiency and ability to supply clean drinking water to more areas of the city.
The ceremony was also attended by Secretary Local Government Sindh Waseem Shamshad, Chief Operating Officer KWSC Asadullah Khan, senior government officials and representatives of the European Investment Bank.
The partnership was viewed as a major milestone towards sustainable urban development and a more resilient water supply system for Karachi’s growing population.
