KARACHI: A Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI) audit officer has been suspended and ordered to report to head office after a registered employer lodged a written complaint alleging a demand for bribe during an inspection.
The SESSI commissioner took action against audit officer Faraj Ali Qureshi following allegations that he had pressured a private company for illegal payment in connection with a social security records inspection. The suspension order was issued after the complaint was formally submitted by the company owner.
Officials said the move came under a broader push for stricter accountability within the institution, which has recently introduced several reforms aimed at improving transparency and services for both workers and employers.
According to officials, the complainant accused the audit officer of demanding a substantial bribe under the guise of an inspection process, prompting swift administrative intervention. The director of administration, Wakeel-ud-Din Shah, is understood to have taken a firm stance on the matter, acting under what officials described as a “zero-tolerance policy” towards corruption.
Sindh’s labor minister, Saeed Ghani, has previously issued clear instructions to all departments under his ministry that corruption in labor institutions would not be tolerated, and that strict action must follow any credible complaint. In line with those directives, officials said, disciplinary proceedings have been intensified across the institution.
In recent weeks, SESSI has already taken action against several senior officials, including medical superintendents in Grade 19 and 20, who were suspended and issued show-cause notices as part of ongoing internal accountability measures.
