KARACHI: The Accident and Emergency Department of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), in collaboration with Rescue 1122, organized a disaster drill workshop on Thursday at JPMC Karachi.
The aim of the workshop was capacity-building in disaster preparedness and immediate response. Teams from the Emergency Room (ER), IMIG SMC, RESQ and the Sindh Emergency Rescue Service demonstrated various emergency response techniques during the session.
The workshop was attended by multiple chief guests, including Sindh Senior Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Minister for Local Government and Housing Town Planning Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi Professor Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University Brigadier (retd) Wajid Mahar, Director General Rescue 1122, officials from the Rehabilitation Department of the Government of Sindh, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, and Professor Khalid Sher, who attended as guest of honor.
In his address, Senior Minister Nasir Hussain Shah stressed the importance of disaster preparedness demonstrations and advised citizens to keep fire extinguishers at home as essential domestic safety equipment. He also assured participants that efforts would be made to improve the city’s infrastructure in the coming months.
Deputy Inspector General Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, in his remarks, urged the medical community to remain prepared at all times to deal with emergencies, noting that such situations can arise without warning. He also emphasized raising public awareness on the use of fire blankets and extinguishers, while stressing the importance of checking their expiry dates.
Guest of honor and Director of Jinnah Hospital, Professor Khalid Sher, said such workshops help improve coordination, communication and interdepartmental cooperation for effective disaster response. He also recommended that the administration produce short awareness videos on emergency response for public education.
The workshop was organized by Dr Muhammad Suleman, Joint Executive Director JPMC; Dr Nousheen Rauf, Deputy Director and Incharge A&E JPMC; and Irfan Siddiqui, Assistant Professor and Deputy Incharge A&E JPMC. Dr Sanober, Assistant Professor A&E JPMC, served as facilitator. Participants were awarded certificates, while appreciation shields were presented to the chief guests.
